Abstract
- This book explores the unpredictable processes by which institutions emerge, evolve, and transform in response to complex interactions. Challenging traditional institutional theories, it introduces path emergence theory, which views institutions not as static constructs but as dynamic, adaptive systems shaped by the continuous interplay of individual actions, social interactions, and structural conditions. By combining insights from complexity science, cognitive neuroscience, and evolutionary theory, the author develops a framework that emphasizes the fluidity and unpredictability of institutional dynamics. The book presents both a theoretical foundation and real-world case studies, including the Helsinki Process and the evolving dynamics of the Korean Peninsula. It illustrates how small, decentralized actions can ripple through societies, fostering regional and global change. The book offers a fresh perspective on institutional change, highlighting the role of agency, co-evolutionary dynamics, and symbolic communication, and provides valuable insights for scholars, policymakers, and those engaged in institutional transformation.
