Abstract

This book discusses the archaeological study at the site of Bukit Tengkorak, Semporna, Sabah from 1994 to 2014. It was found that the site dated around 3,000 years ago and was an important prehistoric site in Southeast Asia and the Pacific. The surveys and excavations in Bukit Tengkorak have shown that the site is rich with archaeological evidence and artefact such as pottery, stone tool and food leftover. Scientific studies done at Bukit Tengkorak found that the site was one of the largest prehistoric pottery-making sites in Southeast Asia. An important finding from Bukit Tengkorak is the archaeological evidence about prehistoric human migration and the longest transit or maritime trading route in the world during the Neolithic period. Also included in this book are the pottery-making tradition of the Bajau ethnic that is related to the prehistoric pottery of Bukit Tengkorak and brief information about other archaeological sites in Semporna to give readers a clear description regarding the archaeology in Semporna and Sabah. Lastly, this book discusses the development history of Bukit Tengkorak as a heritage archaeological site for archaeological tourism in Semporna, Sabah and Malaysia.
