Abstract

In Buenos Aires, in the mid 1930s, there was a cultural and building transformation that sparked debates with the intervention of different agents. In those years, for aesthetic and ethical reasons certain artists and intellectuals, imbued with avantgarde ideals, acted as the new men and women who chose to live in modernist houses, as well as producing, distributing and exhibiting images that could – sooner or later – bring the benefits of modernization to these latitudes. From the figures of Horacio Coppola and Grete Stern, and the icon of the Obelisk filmed and photographed by this marriage, this article explores the ways in which the media – in particular, cinema – showed the modernization of a metropolitan Buenos Aires.
