Abstract

Th.is artiele is a short historical study which analyzes the concept of insularity from the point of view of two countries, Haiti and Dominican Republic. These are separated by a political frontier, which at the same time marks a boundary between two different cultures, one creole, and the other indigenous, and between two geographic systems. Among other things, insularity is perceived not just as a physical fact, but as a consequence of the reigning social practices.
