Abstract

The performance of photoluminescent paints for road marking have been assessed from calibrated camera measurements during 18 months in outdoor conditions. It has been quantified as the cumulative time at night during which the luminance of a photoluminescent marking exceeds that of conventional road marking. This indicator was studied over time according to external conditions. Findings confirm a strong influence of night-time illumination, leading to a predictive model. Based on this model, a method is proposed to predict the luminescence performance over a year in a given place as a function of the yearly distribution of horizontal illuminance averaged during the night. Finally, we provide some cues and a methodology for future regulations of these innovative products.
