Abstract

The Glass Bead Game, a novel written by Hermann Hesse is understandable on many levels. It disserts on the spiritual and intellectual world constructed by universities and their principal representatives. In the broadest sense it deals with the possibility of existence of small elite groups keeping and fostering the noble Glass Bead Game. In more detailed view the game is something very hermetical and artificial, crossing borders of particular arts and sciences. Under very similar perspective can be seen the game played by rules of the New Music. Dodecaphony and row techniques became for a certain period the main expressive tool for the czech exile composer Jan Novák (1921–1984).
