Abstract

Politically correct language uses different discoursive strategies to hold up a liberal and apparently respectful discourse. The semantic field of professions lies under this influence, showing a clear tendency towards their ennoblement. In this essay the euphemistic and dysphemistic use of names in the profession of teaching is studied. In order to do so, I have analysed different educational laws passed in Spain between 1986 and 2006 as well as different types of educational texts. The main goal of this research is to show the different linguistic strategies used in the creation of euphemistic and dysphemistic substitutes. The sender will follow politically correct language premises or will avoid them according to its communicative intention or pragmatic situation.
