Abstract

The Agudezas (1674) by Francisco de la Torre Sevil proposes more than a translation project of John Owen’s Epigrammata. Its prefaces give a proposal to poetic version that corresponds to the adaptation of a humanist generic model in full view of conceptist wit, deployed in translations close to there originals but including added materials in a freer style following the model of the Welsh latin poet. Related to Gracian’s environment and its poetic proposals, Torre Sevil adapts the agudeza, twenty years after the treaty of the Jesuit, to new expressive codes, where wit is moving away from epistemological aspirations and goes towards an exercise in style, as it is reflected in the change of title for the volume.
