Abstract
- Fray Luis de Leon’s dedication to the translation of the Psalms was not uncommon in 16th century spiritual literature, where approaches of all kinds to the Book of David abound. Translating poetry was not unusual either, in a European context with a large production of that genre. This paper aims at proving how, based on the analysis of Psalm 26, the interest shown by Fray Luis in paraphrasing the Psalms does not stem from his desire to use rhetorical style or from a piety-through-poetry approach, but rather from his interpretation and personal adoption of meanings established by exegetical tradition.
