TThe increasing political and religious conflicts had certainly highlighted the end of the XIX century, as well as the development of a public opinion aware of queries and changes of its time. As an “intellectual activist”, Heliodoro Salgado has not ignore all the disturbances, from the “religious aspect” to republicanism, always taking into account the socialist component. Through published articles in the socialist journal O Protesto Operário, we sought to clarify his role as an anticlerical and progressive militant, defined by unwavering beliefs, and his ideological and political attitude, at times dubious and uncertain, between the republic movement and socialism.
