Abstract
- Tacrolimus, an immunomodulatory agent with a rich history in transplantation medicine, has emerged as a pivotal player in ophthalmology. This comprehensive review navigates through its multifaceted role, encompassing both chronic and acute management scenarios. In chronic applications, tacrolimus showcases its efficacy in addressing autoimmune disorders, preventing graft rejection, and managing chronic inflammatory diseases. Noteworthy clinical trials and real-world applications emphasize its significant standing in the therapeutic landscape. In acute settings, tacrolimus demonstrates versatility by contributing to the management of ocular surface diseases, responding to sudden inflammatory events, and enhancing postsurgical interventions. Case studies underscore its efficacy in urgent and time-sensitive situations. The drug’s adaptability across chronic and acute applications positions it as a valuable asset for diverse ophthalmic conditions. As tacrolimus cements its role in clinical practice, ongoing research explores innovative drug delivery systems, precision medicine applications, and combination therapies. Comparative effectiveness studies shed light on its relative benefits, while real-world evidence contributes to a nuanced understanding of its long-term safety profile, concluding by highlighting tacrolimus’s significance in current clinical practice and offering insights into potential future directions, promising continued advancements in ophthalmic therapeutics.
