Abstract

In Imperial times, the Roman army was confronted by prodigies, omens, divine orders and advice. Through these signs the gods addressed the soldiers. They manifested their wrath, delivered warnings about their future, were profuse in giving orders and advice and were able to be of assistance. Closely connected to the military institution, these signs could stage soldiers, their weaponry, the great symbols connected to the army. Those various testimonies demonstrate that the religious aspect proved paramount within the military institution: its members respected the word of the gods and, in their interventions, expected efficacious assistance in front of the dangers and uncertainties made multifarious by their status as soldiers.
