Abstract

Redox flow batteries (RFBs) have attracted considerable attention in recent years owing to their promising potential for large-scale energy storage, particularly in integrating intermittent renewable energy sources and enhancing grid stability. The ion selective membrane conducts charge carriers and prevents redox-active species from crossing over, which is one of the most important components of RFBs and has significant impacts on the performance and lifespan of RFBs. Herein, we discuss the developments and challenges of ion selective membranes, including ion exchange membrane and ion-conducting porous membrane, for redox flow battery applications. We analyze the design considerations for various emerging redox flow battery systems. This discussion provides insights into the design and selection of ion selective membrane for redox flow batteries.
