Abstract

Comparing and networking theoretical frameworks is a topic treated by various authors and discussion forums, as a source of enrichment and starting point for advancing theory development. In this paper we present a study about this topic, establishing a relationship between ethnomathematics and the onto-semiotic approach (OSA) to mathematical knowledge and instruction. Ethnomathematics is a research program with a consolidated international presence that proposes an expanded vision of mathematics and mathematics education. The OSA is a theoretical framework, which is widespread and valued in the community of scholars in mathematics education. A reciprocal glance of both theoretical frameworks can provide mutual enrichment. Specifically the basic features and the paradigmatic issues addressed by both theoretical frameworks are presented and compared. Some commonalities and complementarities are also identified.
