Abstract

As something that has been very under-analysed in sociology, industrial design plans are a way of prescribing key manual labour in metal construction workshops. The article tries to show that worker literacy is a particularly relevant way of analysing manual labour. By seeing how professional texts are used, it is possible to objectify the way that workers mobilise cognitive economics when reading these plans. This can enhance understanding of how manual labour is prescribed in these workshops. Otherwise, as a way of prescribing work, the plans enhance understanding of modalities for articulating both control regulations and autonomous regulations through the use of intermediary objects.
