Abstract: The paper aims to describe the years of Alessandro Natta as Secretary of the Italian Communist Party from 1985 to 1988. It reconstructs the self-representation of the party’s leadership through its newspaper. During those years, the self-representation of Pci as a strong actor in the Italian politics gave to its leadership the opportunity to mediate the conflict between the different positions in the body of the party. That wasn’t possible anymore when its leaders lost a clear vision of the role of Pci in the Italian society.
