Intersectoral strategy on social determinants of health in low birth weight

Abstract

Background: the approach to low birth weight requires the introduction of participatory approaches in intersectoral coordination to contribute to the establishment of mechanisms to ensure diversified leadership, shared decision-making and community empowerment. Objective: to design and validate an intersectoral intervention strategy on the social determinants of health in low birth weight. Methods: a study was carried out on participatory health systems and services, its product was an intersectoral strategy on the social determinants of health that influenced low birth weight in Las Tunas, in the period from January 2021 to December 2022. The universe was made up of 260 low birth weights occurred in the aforementioned period, and a sample of 113, stratified sampling with proportional distribution was used. The strategy was designed in three stages: diagnosis, design and theoretical validation. Results: low birth weight was related to all the social determinants of health studied, smokers, family dysfunction, older ages and non-use of group activities with OR predominated (8.0; 7.3 and 7.2 respectively). The intersectoral strategy was built with 8 strategic objectives and 13 actions, indicators and criteria for measures. Conclusions: the intersectoral intervention strategy on the social determinants of health in low birth weight was designed and validated. It was viable because of its impact, functionality and timeliness, the content of which allows the possibility of use in other contexts.
