Abstract

This paper discusses the advantages and limitations of four techniques for urban climate and the urban heat island analysis considering the Metropolitan Area of Rio de Janeiro (MARJ) as the study area. The techniques presented and discussed are the time series analysis of the standard meteorological station, fixed and mobile transects, remote sensing (Landsat) and numerical modeling (Mesoscale Model Version 5 – MM-5). The first technique is most classical in urban climate studies, but it is limited to only one point on the surface, while fixed and mobile transects cover more points for spatial mapping. Remote sensing and numerical modeling extend spatial coverage and access the entire study area, providing detail and knowledge of the urban climate. We conclude that a more comprehensive and complete urban climate study is given with the combined use of these techniques. This paper discusses the advantages and limitations of four techniques for urban climate and the urban heat island analysis considering the Metropolitan Area of Rio de Janeiro (MARJ) as the study area.
