Abstract

Through the study of the insubordination of the nobles, this paper examines the social and political transformation that took place in the Kingdom of León during the 10th century. The study of the forms of rebellion employed by the nobles, the interests and objectives of the magnates, the type and extent of the punitive measures undertaken by the kings reveal, in effect, the development of profound social changes marking the emergence of an aristocracy that had its own political prerogatives and social independence from the monarchy. The conflicts of the aristocracy are a clear manifestation of the dynamics of a feudal system that was still in its infancy but which, at the same time, was producing changes in the political system in the north of Spain.
