Abstract
- This article is a review of how the Monophysite concept of «compound nature» and the Dyophysite concept of «compound hypostasis» were introduced into the context of Christological debates of the 6th century. A clash of these concepts revealed how deep the diff erence between moderate Monophysites Severian and Orthodox Dyophysites was. An analysis of the «compound hypostasis» concept and the author’s attempt to defi ne its place and meaning in the history of Orthodox Christology allowed him to suggest that this concept was not self-suffi cient. Instead, it was part of a full complex of theological and philosophical ideas that shaped the development of Dyophysite Christology of the sixth and seventh century.
