Abstract

In this essay, we present a study that was carried out in a municipal public school called Eunice Moreira dos Santos, located in the Municipality of Parauapebas, Pará, Brazil. The object of investigation are physical constructions that constitute Praça da Bible, whose purpose was to problematize geometric shapes and measurements for teaching plane geometry. To do this, we draw inspiration from the Basic Units of Problem Solving (UBPs), as an Active Method for Teaching Mathematics. The operationalization took place through field research with a class from the 8th year of Elementary School with problematizations of mathematical questions involving area calculation. The results pointed to the real possibility of teaching area calculation, through physical constructions, conceiving Mathematics as a science linked to physical and imaginary phenomena in the social context of human beings. Therefore, it enhanced numerous student skills, among which we highlight autonomy, curiosity, creativity, the desire to learn Mathematics, protagonism and mastery of mathematical concepts and calculations.
