Abstract

Faced with the repression of Messali Hadj, some activists of the French Left, often in opposition to the directions of the PCF and the SFIO, gathered in a committee in 1954 to release the pioneer of Algerian nationalism. These activists (communists, anarchists, socialists, Trotskyists, etc.) were also involved in various groups: political (CLADO), union (PUMSUD) or intellectual (Arguments). Some agreed on the agenda of decolonization and others were more responsive to that of destalinization. By evoking these three initiatives supported by French outsiders, this article seeks to highlight what is at stake in transactions with other outsiders: the Messalists gradually marginalized by the FLN.
