Abstract

This paper analyzes the meaning and uses of the French term of address mon frère in a contemporary movie, L’Esquive, given that the use of this term should be considered as a stylistic marker of teenager speech in the socially defined community of a working-class Parisian suburb. I focus on formal features such as invariability and loss of referential properties, which demonstrate that mon frère is to be characterized as a discursive marker notwithstanding its appellative origins. I then study its main pragmatic features, showing that mon frère can be described as a consensus marker constructing, reasserting or simply dealing with mutual manifestness, which is a major issue as far as linguistic intersubjectivity is concerned.
