Abstract

Morphologic variability in the Iberian Peninsula of Centaurea paniculata L. (Centaurea L. sect. Centaurea), an endemic species of SW Europe, is discussed. It is represented by three subspecies with well-defined areas: subsp. paniculata, subsp. leucophaea (Jord.) Arcang. and subsp. oscensis, a new subspecies, whose chromosome number is counted (2n = 18). Moreover, the variability of C. hanryi Jord, an endemism of NE Spain and SE France is studied, and finally, the distribution in the Iberian Peninsula of the neophyte C. diffusa Lam. is commented.
