Abstract

In this paper we address the figure of Spanish King Juan Carlos I and the role played by the media during the first steps of the so-called “the Transition”. With that purpose, we analyse how the Spanish press covered the trip of Their Majesties the King and the Queen of Spain to USA in June 1976, in such a way that we find out if the coverage was in line with the importance this event would have on the road of Spain towards democracy. Furthermore, it seeks to reveal similarities and differences among the media through the analysis of each newspaper. To that end, it has been consulted the digital archive of ABC, El País and La Vanguardia, ranging from one week before the arrival of the monarchs to the States to one week later (from 26 May to 9 June). As a result, it is observed that all the media examined gave a distinguished relevance to this event, although each one covered it differently.
