Abstract
- Using standard kinetic equations, we show that the thermal equilibrium between conduction electrons and phonons is unstable when the renormalized electron-phonon coupling exceeds a certain threshold. We prove that negative electronic specific heat, $C_\mathrm{el}<0$, is sufficient for instability. Specifically, the instability sets in as soon as the quasiparticle weight becomes negative for a range of energies, even before $C_\mathrm{el}$ turns negative. Similarly to the negative compressibility of the Van der Waals gas, the $C_\mathrm{el}<0$ instability signals a first order phase transition, in this case a structural one.<br />Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, 1 table
