Abstract
- We generalize conventional multiferroicity \ -- simultaneous existence of ferroelectric and ferromagnetic orders \ -- to multipolar degrees of freedom, examining its emergence in a $d^2$ Mott insulator with strong spin-orbit and Hund's couplings. Specifically, we investigate the origin of magnetic multipolar interactions in $d^2$ Mott insulators. In addition, we show that an admixture of quadrupolar and octupolar magnetic order simultaneously induces electrical quadrupolar and ferroelectric polarization. Our theoretical formalism extends the multiferroic framework to the higher-order sector, exploring the possibility of coexisting multipolar orders of the same and different ranks. We finally comment on some of the experimental signatures.<br />Comment: 5+12 pages, 7 figures, comments are welcome
