Developing Fifth Grade Students' Graphic Literacy Skill Levels

Çalışmada 5. sınıf öğrencilerinin grafikleri okuma-anlama, yorumlama ve dönüştürme becerilerinin ne düzeyde olduğunu belirlemek, grafik okuryazarlığı öğretiminin öğrencilerin bu becerileri geliştirmedeki etkisini tespit etmek amaçlanmıştır. Grafikler; verilerin işlenmesi, yorumlanması ve anlamlandırılması açısından önem taşır. Matematikten tıpa birçok farklı alanda grafikler kullanılmaktadır. Bu nedenle öğretim sürecinde grafik okuryazarlık becerisi gelişmiş bireylerin akademik ve sosyal hayatlarında daha başarılı olacağı aşikârdır. Bu sebeplerle bu araştırmanın yapılmasının önemli olduğu düşünülmektedir. Araştırmada nicel model kullanılmıştır. Birinci alt problem için betimsel tarama; ikinci alt problemde ise ön test-son test tek gruplu yarı deneysel desen kullanılmıştır. Çalışma grubu, kolay ulaşılabilir örneklem seçme tekniği ile belirlenmiş olup 5. sınıf düzeyinde öğrenim gören 16 öğrenciden oluşmaktadır. Araştırmada veri toplama aracı olarak “5. sınıf öğrencileri için “Grafik Okuryazarlığı Düzey Belirleme Testleri” kullanılmıştır. Veri analizinde aritmetik ortalama, yüzde hesaplama ve tekrarlı ANOVA istatistiklerinden yararlanılmıştır. Elde edilen veriler dikkate alındığında grafiği okuma anlama boyutunun kalıcılık testinin, ön teste göre; grafiği dönüştürme boyutunun son test ve kalıcılık testinin, ön teste göre; grafik okuryazarlığı becerilerinin son testi ve kalıcılık testinin, ön teste göre pozitif yönde anlamlı farklılıklara sahip olduğu görülmektedir. Yorumlama boyutunda testlerdeki ikili karşılaştırmalar incelendiğinde testler arasında anlamlı bir fark bulunamamıştır.
In the study, it was aimed to determine the level of graphic reading-understanding, interpretation and transformation skills of fifth grade students and to determine the effect of graphic literacy teaching on the development of these skills. A quantitative approach was used in the research. Descriptive search for the first sub-problem; in the second sub-problem, pretest-posttest single-group quasi-experimental design was used. The study group was determined by the convenience sampling selection technique and consists of 16 students studying at the fifth grade level. As a data collection tool in the research "Graphic Literacy Level Determination Tests for The Fifth Grade Students" was used. In data analysis, descriptive statistics (arithmetic mean, percentage calculation) and measured ANOVA statistics were used.Considering results of research, it was revealed that the practice gave positive results. It’s seen that the permanence test of the graphic reading comprehension dimension has positive significant differences compared to the pretest, the posttest and permanence test for the graph transforming dimension, the posttest of graphic literacy skills compared to the pretest and the permanence test compared to the pretest. In the interpretation dimension, when the pairwise comparisons that created the significant difference were examined, no significant difference was found between the tests.
