18nci Yüzyıl Osmanlısında Ruhban Sınıfına Geçiş Konusunda Sakız Adası’ndan İki Örnek: Papaz Michalis ve Keşiş Genatios

Clergy has been separated from the rest of the society from the start of the first ages where the religious identities had an effect on the social status. In this study, transition into clergy from the Ottoman Orthodox Christian community and the change that this transition brought will be examined through two sample stories from Chios Island. Between the years of 1566- 1912 for a period of 346 years the island community was ruled under full domination of Ottoman Empire and the inner workings of traditional structures have survived as they had been recorded in the community registers. In this article, the registers of Kalamoti/Chios which is one of the mastic villages of the island have been studied and from the information gathered from these registers, the transition into clergy class and its effects are analyzed.
Dinsel kimliklerin toplumsal statüye etki ettiği ilk zamanlardan itibaren ruhban sınıfı toplumun diğer kesimlerinden ayrı tutulmuştur. Bu çalışmada, Osmanlı bünyesindeki Ortodoks Hıristiyan cemaati içinden ruhban sınıfına geçiş ve bu geçişle beraber gelen değişim, Sakız Adası’ndan iki örnek üzerinden tespit edilmeye çalışılmıştır. 1566-1912 yılları arasında tam 346 yılını Osmanlı hâkimiyetinde geçiren ada halkının geleneksel yapısındaki iç işleyiş, cemaat kayıtlarına yansıdığı kadarıyla günümüze ulaşmıştır. Makalede adanın damla sakızı köylerinden olan Kalamoti’ye ait bu kayıtlar incelenmiş ve bunlardan elde edilen bilgiler doğrultusunda ruhban sınıfına geçiş aşaması ve etkileri değerlendirilmeye çalışılmıştır.
