Abstract

In 1992, Brose et al. showed that the synaptic vesicle (SV) protein p65/synaptotagmin (syt) 1 binds - in a mutually dependent manner - Ca(2+) and anionic phospholipids, prompting the idea that it functions as a Ca(2+) sensor for exocytosis. These findings now define two key aspects of excitation-secretion coupling.
