- Mechanosensitive ion channels are integral membrane proteins ubiquitously present in bacteria, archaea, and eukarya. They act as molecular sensors of mechanical stress to serve vital functions such as touch, hearing, osmotic pressure, proprioception and balance, while their malfunction is often associated with pathologies.
