Abstract

Current epidemiological data about fecal incontinence are reviewed. Anatomy and physiology of the anal sphincter are described, and it is shown that continence relies on several interdependent anatomical and functional factors. Etiology of fecal incontinence is discussed and illustrated by clinical examples.
