Les contraintes matérielles et sociales d’un terrain permettent et/ou requièrent parfois d’inventer des modes d’enquêtes. Non seulement du fait de leur isolement ou de l’éloignement qu’ils proposent, mais aussi de leur qualité labyrinthique, de leurs interdits et leurs secrets, les souterrains ouvrent-ils la voie à ce genre d’innovations et de jeux heuristiques ? Les catacombes de Paris aménagées et visitées de longue date offrent un terrain d’expérimentation propice pour tester cette hypothèse. Afin d’entrer en contact avec les cataphiles, réputés pour leur art de l’esquive et du hacking, j’ai établi un dispositif tenant autant de l’enquête ethnographique que de la performance artistique pour construire un terrain… de jeu commun.
