Monetalis Imago Bestiae. Los animales en la iconografía monetaria del África romana

Cette contribution constitue une analyse iconologique et iconographique des divers types d’animaux sur les pièces monétaires émises en Afrique du Nord durant l’Antiquité. Ces pièces ont été mises en circulation à partir du début de l’activité des ateliers d’Afrique du Nord, au iie siècle av. J.-C, jusqu’à la fin de l’époque impériale romaine. Les figures reproduites sont des emblèmes et insignes qui représentent efficacement les villes mentionnées. Ce voyage géo-synchrone et symbolique que nous proposons comprend une interprétation des allusions et des significations des images, avec une description détaillée des messages contenus. The aims is to realize a complete iconological study of animal theme iconography of the monetary pieces coined by North African mints during Antiquity. The images exhibited in these coins, minted between the beginnings of their monetary activity, in the 2nd century BC, until the end of Roman imperial times, became manifest emblems and badges that were able to represent the cities that were linked with these mints. We aim to present an exhaustive survey of the various genealogical strata and the most immediate parallels of these representations. Furthermore, this geo-synchronous and symbolic overhaul that we propose also include a thorough interpretation of the various allusions and meanings collected in the mentioned images, comprising a detailed description of the different and analogues messages that may be present.
