Perspective et regard dans les Cent nouvelles nouvelles

Il s’agit de s’interroger sur l’émergence de la « nouvelle » aux côtés du « roman » et sur le sens même du terme choisi pour désigner au XVe siècle le récit bref. L’hypothèse sera faite d’un rapport entre l’incomplétude de la nouvelle et le trajet d’un regard toujours limité quel que soit le désir de totalité qui le sous-tend. Le non ajustement de la nouvelle apparaît comme une condition d’exercice du regard. Nouvelle et regard jouent ainsi sur la tromperie et le quiproquo. L’écart entre voir et non vu, intérieur et extérieur jamais ne se résorbe quels que soient les efforts – obscènes, comiques, érotiques – que déploient les personnages des Cent Nouvelles nouvelles. Le voir demeure, au sens strict, affaire de points de vue et, pour le voyeur, tout à la fois plaisir et frustration. The emergence of the « nouvelle » beside the « novel » and the meaning of this term, which was chosen, during the fifteenth century, to designate the short narrative will be examined. I will hypothesize that there is a relation between the nouvelle’s incompleteness and the trajectory of a gaze that is always limited, whatever the underlying desire for totality may be. The nonadjustment of the nouvelle appears as a condition for the exercise of the gaze. Nouvelle and gaze thus play upon deception and misunderstanding. The gap between seen and unseen, and interior and exterior is never re-absorbed, whatever efforts – obscene, comic, erotic – are used by the characters of the Cent Nouvelles nouvelles. Seeing remains, in the strict sense, a business of points of view and, for the seer, is simultaneously pleasurable and frustrating.
