États du corps : du physique au métaphysique

Le sujet chez Michaux suit un parcours qui le conduit du physique au métaphysique, les étapes étant franchies en fonction des rapports entretenus avec le corps. Au commencement, l’être est une « boule » immobile, mais on la force à s’ouvrir, et le sujet doit entrer dans un corps et en accepter les sensations. Dans un premier temps, le sujet visite les parties de son corps et expérimente ses différents états, de la santé à la maladie ; il lui est difficile d’investir tout ce corps nouveau et étranger, c’est pourquoi ses réflexes fonctionnent mal, son corps tend à se dissoudre, à partir en morceaux ou à se laisser envahir par un élément étranger, la souffrance et la douleur par exemple. Mais après s’être abîmé dans la contemplation de son corps, après avoir tenté de l’investir au mieux, le sujet est à nouveau gagné par la tentation de non-participation ; la drogue va l’aider à évacuer le corps et ses sensations, à le dissoudre, volontairement cette fois-ci. Ce n’est qu’alors qu’il pourra s’élancer vers la contemplation de l’« Immuable », de l’« Illimité ». Les fonctions du corps sont donc désormais réduites, à dessein, au minimum ; le sujet a quitté le champ du physique pour entrer dans celui du métaphysique. The subject in Michaux’s work follows a path which leads him from the physical to the metaphysical, the steps from the one to the other being accomplished through the medium of relationships with the body. At the outset, the being is an immobile « boule » (ball), but it is forced to open up, and the subject must enter a body and accept its sensations. During an initial period, the subject visits the various regions of his body and experiences its different states, from health to illness. However, it is difficult for him to give himself over totally to this new and alien body, and this is why his reflexes function badly, his body has a tendency to dissipate, to break up in pieces or to allow itself to be invaded by a foreign element, for example suffering or pain. But having plunged into the contemplation of his body, having tried to fill it to the best of his abilities, the subject is once again won over by the temptation of non-participation. It is drugs that will help him to escape the body and its sensations, to dissipate it on this occasion voluntarily. It is only then that the subject will be able to throw himself towards the contemplation of the « Immutable », of the « Unlimited ». From now on bodily functions are therefore intentionally reduced to a minimum; the subject has left the realm of the physical to enter that of the metaphysical.
