Edifici di culto cristiano in area ostiense

In questo contributo si propongono alcune riflessioni sugli edifici di culto cristiano tardo-antichi/altomedioevali individuati in area ostiense (città e suburbio), per alcuni dei quali sussistono ancora dubbi e incertezze sul loro effettivo utilizzo, sulla struttura architettonica e sulla cronologia. Per l’ambito urbano sono stati riconsiderati alcuni contesti archeologici, anche di sepolture, rinvenuti in vecchi scavi ed alcuni edifici riconosciuti come rivolti al culto cristiano, con un riesame delle strutture murarie ancora conservate e con nuovi spunti interpretativi circa la loro effettiva planimetria, approfondendo in un caso anche l’aspetto storico-archivistico di riferimento. Inoltre è stato verificato il rapporto con gli edifici precedenti sui quali furono costruite queste strutture cristiane ed il loro collegamento con la viabilità urbana. Riguardo agli edifici cristiani del suburbio (la basilica di Pianabella, la basilica di S.Ercolano e la basilica di S.Aurea) si sono individuati alcuni aspetti comuni nelle loro costruzioni, essendo tutti localizzati in aree funerarie, col medesimo orientamento e collegati ad importanti viabilità del territorio. This paper proposes some considerations on the late ancient/early medieval Christian buildings (churches, chapels, etc.) identified in Ostia and its suburban area, for some of which there are still doubts and uncertainties about their actual use, their architectural structure and their chronology. About the urban area, some archaeological contexts, including burials, found in old archaeological excavations and some buildings, recognized as used for Christian worship, have been revised with an examination of the still preserved walls and of their hypothetical plans, analyzing in one case also its historical-archival aspects. Furthermore, the relationship with the previous buildings on which these Christian structures were built and their connection with the urban road network were verified. Regarding the Christian buildings in the suburb (the basilica of Pianabella, the basilica of St. Ercolano and the basilica of St. Aurea), some common features have been identified: all of them are located in the burial areas, with the same orientation, and connected to important roads of the suburb of Ostia.
