Les archives des mondes ferroviaires à Nîmes et en Occitanie : sur les rails de la redécouverte ?

Cet article propose une exploration d’archives redécouvertes dans plusieurs associations d’anciens cheminots d’Occitanie, notamment dans la région de Nîmes. Ces documents, encore en cours d’inventaire et de classement, peuvent constituer pour les historiens un intéressant complément aux informations données dans les archives de la SNCF ou des entreprises du secteur du chemin de fer. Ils s’accompagnent bien souvent de possibilités de recueil d’archives orales susceptibles d’accroître encore leur intérêt. Leur étude peut concerner des domaines aussi variés que le patrimoine bâti des gares, les dépôts et infrastructures diverses, la sécurité des personnels ou encore les opérations de maintenance du matériel roulant, parmi les thèmes qui font actuellement l’objet de recherches historiques. Cependant, l’exploitation de ces archives foisonnantes n’est pas sans embûches, en raison de leurs conditions de conservation et d’accessibilité aléatoires, du caractère hétérogène des corpus et des efforts de contextualisation à fournir, plus importants que pour des archives conservées dans des centres d’archives publics. This article presents an exploration of archives rediscovered in several associations of former railroad workers in Occitania, particularly in Nîmes. These documents, which are still being inventoried and classified, can be an interesting complement for historians to the information given in the archives of the SNCF’s central management or of companies linked to the railroad sector. They are often accompanied by the possibility of collecting oral archives, which can make them even more interesting. Their study can concern fields as diverse as the built heritage of stations, depots and various infrastructures, the safety of personnel or even train maintenance operations, among the themes that are currently the subject of historical research. However, the exploitation of these abundant archives is not without its pitfalls, due to their uncertain conditions of conservation and accessibility, the heterogeneous nature of the corpus and the efforts of contextualization to be made, which are more important than for archives conserved in traditional archive centers.
