Abstract
The construction of the Zagreb railway in the 19th century directly influenced the direction and intensity of the city's spatial expansion and laid the foundation for the modernization processes of urbanization. The longitudinal extension of the railway within the urban fabric soon begins to prevent the further development of the city, and the newly created consequences are already being resolved in the first physical plans. The regulatory bases sought to reconcile the needs of the growing industrial city and connect it, spatially and functionally, into a single unit with the railway. Attempts to solve the "railway issue", which is extremely important for the capital, often interfere with state interests and economic and political opportunities, which results in a large gap between the urban planning maps and their implementation in space. Throughout history, the relationship between Zagreb and the railway can be described as a symbiotic relationship in which relations are subjected to change, from mutualism to parasitism.
