Intercultural Vocabulary Competence of EFL Teacher Education Students

Najnovija istraživanja o engleskom jeziku kao sredstvu globalne komunikacije naglašavaju njegovu denacionalizaciju. Osposobljavanje učenika za komuniciranje s drugima o vlastitoj kulturi, identificirano je kao dio međukulturne kompetencije, jedne od najvažnijih obrazovnih ciljeva poučavanja engleskog kao stranog jezika. Kultura J1 mora biti uldjučena u nastavne materijale, a učitelji moraju biti osposobljeni za korištenje engleskog jezika za predstavljanje elementa kulture J1. Uzimajući u obzir karakteristike mladih učenika J2, kao i podzastupljenost ove teme u postojećim studijama, u radu se raspravlja o ulozi kulture J1 u ranom učenju engleskog kao stranog jezika, skrećući pozornost na gotovo potpuno zanemarivanje kulture J1 u nastavnim materijalima engleskog kao stranog jezika te relativno lošu vokabularnu kompetenciju nastavnika engleskog kao stranog jezika u korištenju engleskog jezika za predstavljanje elemenata kulture J1. U radu se također raspravlja o rezultatima istraživanja vokabularne kompetentnosti vezane uz kulturu J1, koje je provedeno na 66 studenata Anglistike i Učiteljskog studija s modulom ranog učenja engleskog jezika. Istraživanje je također ispitivalo mišljenja studenata o uvođenju J1 kulture u nastavu engleskog kao stranog jezika, kao i njihova iskustva vezana uz kulturu J1 u okviru kurikuluma engleskog jezika. Koristio se mješoviti pristup s kvalitativnim i kvantitativnim podacima. Rezultati potvrdili su nalaze ranijih istraživanja koji pokazuju relativno lošu razinu vokabularne kompetencije vezane uz kulturu J1 i gotovo potpuno odsustvo kulturnog sadržaja J1 u obrazovanju budućih učitelja engleskog kao stranog jezika.
The most recent research on English as a medium of global communication has emphasized its denationalization. Training students for communicating their own culture to others has been identified as part of the intercultural competence, one of the most important educational goals of EFL teaching. L1 culture must be thus incorporated into EFL teaching materials and EFL teachers must be trained for using English to present the elements of L1 culture. Taking into consideration the characteristics of young L2 learners as well as the underrepresentation of the topic in existing studies, the author discusses the role of L1 culture in early EFL drawing attention to an almost total neglect of L1 culture in early EFL teaching materials and EFL teachers' relatively poor vocabulary competence in using English for presenting L1 cultural elements. The paper also discusses the results of research into L1 culture-related vocabulary competence, conducted on 66 university students with an English-Teaching major. The research also examined students' views on introducing L1 culture into EFL as well as their experiences related to L1 culture within English Studies curriculum. A mixed-method approach with qualitative and quantitative data has been used. The results have confirmed the findings of earlier research demonstrating a relatively poor level of the students' L1 culture-related vocabulary competence and an almost total absence of L1 cultural content in the education of prospective EFL teachers.
