Abstract

In one school of thought, however, the lack of participation by any undergraduate in a Catholic university commencement Mass is a portent of a serious malaise that needs, in the first instance, to be acknowledged. [...]a conclusion should lead to quite an urgent need to evangelize. In many countries in the secular West religion seems to be taking an increasingly minor part in both public and private discourse.4 At the same time, taken as a whole, religion has not disappeared and in certain circumstances can play a decisive role in human and societal affairs.5 It also offers an explanation for why large numbers of people may express a low level of religious allegiance and this may accord with cultural norms where to be either too religious or not religious enough are considered to be extreme and unpopular positions."
