Abstract

There is a wide variety of cosmetic products on the market, including largely represented deodorants and antiperspirants. They are used to cover unpleasant odor or to prevent excessive sweating. Their effects can significantly contribute to the mental and physical well-being of the user, and are almost inevitable in our everyday lives. Because they are so widely used, they are often the target of criticism in terms of irritating ingredients and safety. Due to the growing popularity of natural cosmetics, many people are deciding for natural alternatives, ie. deodorants, to avoid antiperspirants. However, the question is, do consumers even understand the difference between deodorants and antiperspirant, and what do they perceive as natural and effective? This question lies behind the topic of this thesis. In the first part, an online survey was performed to obtain data about how Slovenian consumers perceive deodorants or antiperspirants, what is their opinion about natural ingredients and packaging, and what attracts them most to deodorants. We found out that for today's consumers it is very important that their deodorants are of good quality, have a pleasant odor, leave no trace on clothing are effective, affordable and safe for use, do not affect their health or pollute the environment. These are cosmetic products that are used on a daily basis and remain on the skin. In the second part, a stick deodorant was formulated that contained an oak (Quercus petraea) extract and tannins present in the extract. A study with 32 volunteers was conducted who evaluated the sensory properties of a deodorant containing the oak extract and placebo deodorant without the extract. Greater differences in the evaluation of performance of both deodorants were found in subjects who had previously used aluminum antiperspirants. Differences were also seen in performance evaluation, with test subjects generally more satisfied with deodorant containing the oak extract. The tested deodorant formulation achieved very good results in the evaluation of sensory properties, as well as met many requirements of modern consumers, which were detected in the conducted online survey.
