Chemical and spectroscopic characterization of organic matter in Brazilian soils

However, quantitative and qualitative variables such as chemical fractionating of organic matter and spectroscopic humic substance characterization are not contemplated in the Brazilian System of Soil Classification (SiBCS). This study had as objective to analyze chemically and spectroscopic ally the organic matter from some Brazilian soil orders and to correlate the results with chemical properties and texture. There were utilized 52 soil profiles of the following soil orders: Mollisols, Oxisols, Spodosols, Entisols, and Histosols, that total 87 diagnostics horizons, being 61 surface and 26 subsurface horizons. In these horizons they were evaluated for pH, H+, sum of bases (S value), T value (CEC), total organic carbon (COT), and texture. Also, the chemical fractionating of organic matter to obtain the organic carbon of fulvic acid fraction (C-FAF), humic acid fraction (C-HAF) and humin (C-HUM), and spectroscopic analyses on visible range for the alkaline extract (AE) and humic fraction, and on infrared region for the humic acid fraction. The results of chemical fractionating showed unique for each soil order, which were separated in three groups, with base on nature of parent material and soil drainage. In the group of mineral and well drained soils (Mollisols and Oxisols) the HUM was predominant in the studied horizons (average of 61.0%), and the values of C-AE/C-HUM and C-HAF/C-FAF ratios were, in general, smaller than 1.0. In the mineral and imperfect and poor drained soils (Spodosols and Entisols), the HUM prevailed only in the surface horizons; while, in the subsurface horizons the FAF and HAF had the highest participations. Within this group, for the subsurface horizons the values of C-AE/C-HUM ratio were higher than 1.5, indicating the movement of alkaline-soluble fractions along the soil profile. For the soils of organic constitution and very poor drained (Histosols), the HAF was predominant and the values of CHAF/ C-FAF ratio were higher than 2.0, showing the influence of hidromorphic conditions in the soil organic matter dynamics. The most significant correlations were observed among CHAF, C-HUM and TOC with pH, S value and CEC, an evidence of the importance of the SOM fractions and TOC in the fertility of these soils. The results of the spectroscopic analyses in the visible range of AE showed different behavior among the horizons, being the E4/E6 values influenced by the quantity of fulvic and humic acids; while, for the humic acid, the E4/E6 values showed high humification rate and/or big molecules size and molecular mass. The characteristics of the infrared spectra of humic acid allowed to differentiated five types, named as Type A (more aromatic); Type B; Type C (intermediate); Type D and Type E (more aliphatic). The distribution of the humic substances according to the chemical fractionating and the groupings showed by the variables in the analysis of principal components, associated to the characteristics of the diagnostic horizons spectra may contribute to structuring the SiBCS in the lower hierarchical levels (5th and 6th); mainly, in the mollic, humic, and moderate A horizons, and the spodic (B) and histic (H) horizons. A import?ncia da mat?ria org?nica nos estudos de pedologia e classifica??o de solos em regi?es tropicais ? evidenciada pelos atributos diferenciais: teor de carbono org?nico, grau de decomposi??o da mat?ria org?nica e teor de fibras. No entanto, vari?veis quantitativas e qualitativas, como o fracionamento qu?mico da mat?ria org?nica e a caracteriza??o espectrosc?pica das subst?ncias h?micas, n?o s?o contempladas no Sistema Brasileiro de Classifica??o de Solos (SiBCS). Este estudo teve como objetivo analisar qu?mica e espectroscopicamente a mat?ria org?nica de algumas ordens de solo do Brasil e correlacionar os resultados com as propriedades qu?micas e granulometria. Foram utilizados 52 perfis das seguintes ordens: Chernossolos, Latossolos, Espodossolos, Gleissolos e Organossolos; o que totalizou 87 horizontes diagn?sticos, sendo 61 superficiais e 26 subsuperficiais. Nestes horizontes foram avaliados o pH, H+, soma de bases (valor S), valor T (CTC), carbono org?nico total (COT) e granulometria, al?m, do fracionamento qu?mico da mat?ria org?nica para obten??o do carbono org?nico das fra??es: ?cidos f?lvicos (C-FAF), ?cidos h?micos (CFAH) e humina (C-HUM). Tamb?m, foram feitas an?lises espectrosc?picas na regi?o do vis?vel para o extrato alcalino (EA) e os ?cidos h?micos e na regi?o do infravermelho para os ?cidos h?micos. Quanto ao fracionamento qu?mico observaram-se peculiariadades para cada ordem de solo, sendo estas separadas em tr?s grupos, com base no material de origem e a drenagem do solo. No grupo dos solos minerais e bem drenados (Chernossolos e Latossolos) a HUM foi predominante nos horizontes estudados (m?dia de 61,0 %) e os valores das rela??es C-EA/C-HUM e C-FAH/C-FAF foram, em geral, menores que 1,0. Nos solos minerais, imperfeitamente e mal drenados (Espodossolos e Gleissolos), a HUM predominou somente nos horizontes superficiais; enquanto, nos horizontes subuperficiais as maiores participa??es foram da FAF e da FAH. Dentro deste grupo, para os horizontes subsuperficias os valores da rela??o C-EA/C-HUM foram maiores que 1,5, indicando movimenta??o das fra??es alcalinosol?veis ao longo do perfil. Para os solos de constitui??o org?nica e muito mal drenados (Organossolos), a FAH predominou e os valores da rela??o C-FAH/C-FAF foram maiores que 2,0, mostrando influ?ncia do hidromorfismo na din?mica da MOS. As correla??es mais significativas foram observadas entre o C-FAH, C-HUM e COT com pH, valor S e CTC, evidencia da import?ncia das fra??es da MOS e do COT na fertilidade destes solos. As an?lises espectrosc?picas na faixa vis?vel do EA mostraram comportamentos diferenciados entre os horizontes, sendo os valores de E4/E6 influenciados pela quantidade de ?cidos f?lvicos e h?micos; enquanto, para os ?cidos h?micos, os valores de E4/E6 demonstraram alto ?ndice de humifica??o e/ou mol?culas de maior tamanho e massa molecular. As caracter?sticas dos espectros de infravermelho dos ?cidos h?micos permitem diferenciar cinco tipos, denominados de Tipo A (mais arom?tico); Tipo B; Tipo C (intermedi?rio); Tipo D e Tipo E (mais alif?tico). A distribui??o das subst?ncias h?micas por meio do fracionamento qu?mico e os agrupamentos apresentados pelas vari?veis na an?lise de componentes principais, associados ?s caracter?sticas dos espectros dos horizontes diagn?sticos podem contribuir na estrutura??o do SiBCS nos n?veis hier?rquicos inferiores (5? e 6?), principalmente, nos horizontes A chernoz?mico, A h?mico, A moderado, B esp?dico, H h?stico.
