Myofascial pain is more frequent in patients with TMD, being characterized by the presence of hypersensitive points in the facial musculature, where muscular hyperactivity is observed. This clinical trial aims to evaluate the effectiveness of acupuncture and low-level laser therapy in patients with myofascial pain caused by TMD pain. We recruited 14 patients diagnosed with myofascial pain through RDC / TMD. Patients were randomly divided into two groups, where each group consisted of seven patients. Group 1 was submitted to ten acupuncture sessions lasting 20 minutes each, where the needles were positioned at points F3, B60, IG4, IG11, VG20, E6, E7, ID19, TA21 and Yin Tang for the treatment of myofascial pain and DTM. Group 2 received low-power infra-red laser sessions. Patients in this group had laser therapy sessions until remission of painful symptoms or up to a maximum of 10 sessions. The laser application points were determined according to the point of pain reported by the patient. Before and after treatment, all patients underwent electromyography of the temporalis muscles (anterior branch) and masseter on both sides by a single trained professional. The sample consisted of 14 patients, of which 10 were female and 4 were male, with a mean of 29.5 years. Data were analyzed using the Statistcal Package for Social Science (SPSS), version 22.0, where the Wilcoxon test and the paired T-test were performed. In the group treated with acupuncture, there was a decrease in the activity in the muscles assessed in protrusion and in laterality to the right, both with no statistically significant difference. A statistically significant difference was observed during tightening in the right temporalis muscle, where activity was greater after treatment and there was decreased neuromuscular activity during protrusion in the evaluated muscles, with no statistically significant difference in patients treated with the low-level laser. Regarding VAS, the two treatments were statistically significant in reducing pain, but there was no difference between treatments. It was concluded that the therapies employed in the management of myofascial pain in patients with TMD were able to reduce the patient's perception of pain, as well as to promote changes in the neuromuscular electrical activity of the masseter and temporalis muscles.
