Conceptual and empirical analysis of ethics and values in radical behaviorist psychotherapy

A presente dissertação está composta por dois estudos, sendo o primeiro um artigo conceitual que busca analisar conceitualmente a Ética proposta por Skinner e a Bioética, questionando se a Ética defendida por Skinner fornece subsídios suficientes ou adequados para o processo de tomada de decisões por psicoterapeutas, e buscando responder o que uma Ética behaviorista deveria auxiliar, bem como a possibilidade de conciliá-la com outras éticas já utilizadas. Esse estudo discute tais questionamentos juntamente com a apresentação da Bioética enquanto diretriz utilizada na maior parte das profissões da área da saúde e que apresenta aspectos coerentes com a Ética skinneriana. O segundo estudo compreende a apresentação de uma pesquisa empírica, com oito psicoterapeutas (sendo quatro experientes, e quatro inexperientes), de abordagem comportamental. Esse estudo buscou analisar como os valores de cada terapeuta interferiram na resolução de dois casos clínicos hipotéticos, que contém situações relacionadas aos cinco valores investigados na pesquisa. Os valores de cada terapeuta foram mensurados por meio de uma escala e comparados posteriormente com os resultados das falas coletadas durante a etapa de interpretação dos casos. Os resultados apresentados descrevem quais valores identificados foram aparentes na resolução dos casos clínicos hipotéticos. De modo geral, a dissertação buscou apresentar que os valores pessoais dos terapeutas (enquanto seres biopsicossociais) interferem na eleição de um comportamento-problema. Diante disso, faz-se necessário também apresentar a Ética de forma conceitual, atentando para a necessidade de diretrizes que possibilitem a tomada de decisões éticas por parte do terapeuta, em seu cotidiano de trabalho. The present master thesis is composed of two studies, the first one is a conceptual article that seeks to analyze the Ethics proposed by Skinner and the Bioethics, questioning whether the Ethics defended by Skinner provides sufficient or adequate subsidies for the decision making process by psychotherapists, and seeking to answer what a behaviorist Ethic should help, as well as the possibility of reconciling it with the other ethics already used. This study discusses such questions along with the presentation of Bioethics as a guideline used in most health professions and presents consistent aspects with Skinner's Ethics. The second study presents an empirical research with eight psychotherapists (four experienced, and four inexperienced) of behavioral approach. This study sought to analyze how the values of each therapist interfered in the resolution of two hypothetical clinical cases, which contains situations related to the five values investigated in the research. The values of each therapist were measured with a scale and later compared with the results of the speeches collected during the stage of interpretation of the cases. The results describing which identified values were apparent in the resolution of hypothetical clinical cases. In general, the thesis sought to present that the therapists personal values (as biopsychosocial person) will interfere in the moment they choose a problem behavior. About that, is also necessary to present the Ethics in a conceptual way, attempting to the guideline's importance that allow ethical decision-making on the part of the therapist, in his daily work.
