José Comblin: theologian and pastor of the poor

Between Comblin, as the focus and object of this research, and the researcher, there is something in common: the identification with a Church that must be faithful to Jesus Christ and the Gospel, which prioritizes the service to the poor, without colluding with any political or economic powers, aimed at meeting the needs of humanity, with a sense of justice and equity. José Comblin, from his early years in Louvain, felt uncomfortable with certain practices of the Catholic clergy towards the people. Such discomfort arises in him despite the post-Tridentine theological training he received. He then began to think of another type of theology and to practice another type of pastoral presence in Christian communities. The central assertion of this thesis is that in his life trajectory and in the theology he produced, the central assertions of what Michel Löwy called Liberation Christianity are expressed and summarized. We used a bibliographic research methodology, ordering and interpreting fragments of texts considered important, written in the technique of “frankly-speaking”, which distinguishes Comblin's way of being and thinking. In addition to his own texts, we owe much to recent historical studies on the life of Fr. Comblin, especially the biographies that have been written about him. The procedure we use, as a whole, can be considered a historical-critical method. We hope to have demonstrated in the development of this thesis that José Comblin, whether as a religious and pastoral agent or as a theologian and thinker, was inserted in the socio-political and economic reality of Brazil and Latin America and, together with other relevant theologians and bishops, such as Helder Câmara and Manuel Larraín, led an ecclesiology focused on the poor as an actor and main interpreter of the evangelical proclamation. From these considerations, the title given to the work emerges: José Comblin: theologian and pastor of the poor O objeto deste estudo é a análise da trajetória e da obra de um pensador católico, Pe. José Comblin, enquanto agente histórico e pensador que experimenta e vive a própria teologia. Entre Comblin, como objeto desta pesquisa, e o pesquisador há algo em comum: a identificação com uma Igreja que deve ser fiel a Jesus Cristo e ao Evangelho, que prioriza o serviço aos pobres, sem conchavos com quaisquer poderes de ordem político-econômica, voltada a atender às necessidades da humanidade, com senso de justiça e equidade. Essa identificação de fundo serviu de estímulo para o trabalho metódico e a pesquisa científica. José Comblin, desde os primeiros anos em Louvain, sentia-se incomodado com certas práticas do clero católico em relação ao povo. Tal incômodo surge nele apesar da formação teológica pós-tridentina que recebeu. Começou, então, a pensar outro tipo de teologia e a praticar outro tipo de presença pastoral junto às comunidades cristãs. A afirmação central dessa tese é que em sua trajetória de vida e na teologia que produziu estão expressas e resumidas as afirmações centrais do que Michel Löwy chamou de Cristianismo da Libertação. Empregamos a metodologia da pesquisa de cunho bibliográfico, ordenando e interpretando fragmentos de textos considerados importantes, vazados na técnica do “franco-falar”, que singularizam toda a maneira de ser e pensar de Comblin. Além dos seus próprios textos, devemos muito aos recentes estudos históricos sobre a vida do Pe. Comblin, especialmente às biografias que foram escritas sobre ele. O procedimento que utilizamos, como um todo, pode ser considerado um método histórico-crítico. Esperamos haver demonstrado no desenvolvimento desta tese que José Comblin, seja como agente religioso e pastoral seja como teólogo e pensador, se inseriu na realidade sociopolítica e econômica do Brasil e da América Latina e, junto com outros teólogos e bispos de relevância, como Helder Câmara e Manuel Larraín, liderou uma eclesiologia voltada para o pobre como ator e intérprete principal do anúncio evangélico.
