Phytoremediation is a highly viable technique due to its low cost and minimal environmental impact. However, there are few results regarding the use of tropical grasses in manganese (Mn) phytoremediation, as well as there is no definition on which extractor is more suitable to assess the availability of Mn in soils. The objective of this study was to evaluate the growth of tropical grasses in soil contaminated with Mn and to analyze the Mn availability in the soil. The evaluated grasses were cultivars 'Aruana' and 'Tanzania' of Megathyrsus maximus, 'Xara?s' and 'Marandu' of Urochloa brizantha and 'Basilisk' of Urochloa decumbens grown in Typic Hapludox (Oxisol) with 0, 50, 150 and 450 mg of Mn per kg-? of soil. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse, and the experimental design was completely randomized in a 5x4 factorial scheme, with three replications. The experimental period was 90-days, starting after the uniformization cut of the plants and the dry matter of the shoot and roots of the grasses was evaluated. The Mn concentration in dry matter and available in the soil were extracted by Mehlich-1 and DTPA pH 7.3, while the semi-total concentration determined by USEPA 3051 and total Mn by the USEPA 3052 method. Tropical grasses had their growth reduced with the increasing Mn rates in the soil, with an average reduction for the highest rate of 72 % for 'Aruana', 73 % for 'Basilisk', 79 % for 'Marandu', 93 % for 'Xara?s' and 95 % to 'Tanzania'. The 'Aruana' cultivar showed the greatest potential for phytoextraction due to its greater ability to accumulate Mn in its biomass, followed by cv. 'Basilisk'. The four different extractors used were efficient to measure Mn concentrations in the soil, with higher critical level of Mn toxicity for the USEPA 3051 method due to the semi-total extraction character, and USEPA 3052 due to the total Mn extraction.
