Geochemistry of mangrove sediments from the northeast of Pará: the example of the estuary of the river marapanim

A pesquisa visa compreender os processos e a extensão das transformações geoquímicas e mineralógicas em sedimentos de manguezais, resultante das transições águas continentais-águas oceânicas, no estuário do rio Marapanim, na costa nordeste paraense. O clima, a topografia, amplitude de marés e a evaporação, são os fatores responsáveis pela direção e a circulação interna das águas nos sedimentos de manguezal, fato já descrito em outras regiões submetidas a diferentes condições climáticas. Em contato com fases minerais ricas em ferro e argilo-minerais, originários provavelmente dos sedimentos, lateritos e oxisolos da Formação Barreiras, além de abundante matéria orgânica, as hidrocirculações intersticiais modificam suas características químicas sob diferentes condições de pH, Eh e salinidade, originando novas fases minerais através da dissolução e precipitação. The aim of this research is to understand the processes and extent of geochemical and mineralogical transformations in mangrove sediments, resulting from the transitions between continental and oceanic waters, in the Marapanim estuary, on the coast northeast of Para. The climate, topography, amplitude of tides and evaporation are the factors responsible for the direction and internal circulation of the waters in mangrove sediments, a fact already described in other regions under different climatic conditions. In contact with minerals rich in iron and clay-minerals, probably from sediments, laterites and oxisols of the Barreiras Formation, besides abundant organic matter, the interstitial hydrocirculations modify their chemical characteristics under different conditions of pH, Eh and salinity, giving rise to new phases through dissolution and precipitation.
