The conquest of enunciative space: A study of notes in the spanish translation of Borderlands/La Frontera

Este artículo indaga acerca de la configuración del sentido y de la subjetividad en el seno de distintas prácticas de escritura y traducción. De manera particular, aquí se explora el estatus y funcionamiento enunciativos de las llamadas ‘NOTAS DEL TRADUCTOR’ y de su impacto tanto para la construcción del sentido del discurso como de la imagen o ETHOS que se asocia al TRADUCTOR, es decir, la figura que se yergue como responsable de la enunciación en el discurso traducido. Esta investigación persigue dos objetivos principales. Desde un punto de vista teórico-metodológico, se pretende avanzar en la descripción y caracterización de las notas del Traductor en tanto dispositivo enunciativo clave del discurso traducido. Un segundo objetivo, centrado en el ámbito del análisis, ilustra las reflexiones teórico-metodológicas mediante el estudio de la primera traducción completa al español de Borderlands/ La Frontera. The New Mestiza (Anzaldúa, [1987] 1999), efectuada por Norma E. Cantú y publicada en México en 2015. El estudio de caso muestra la vitalidad de este dispositivo enunciativo para la construcción del sentido y de la subjetividad en el discurso traducido. This paper examines the construction of meaning and subjectivity across different writing and translation practices. More specifically, it explores the enunciative status and functions of so-called ‘TRANSLATOR’S NOTES’ and their impact on the configuration of both discursive meaning and the image or ETHOS which is associated to TRANSLATOR, i.e., the figure that takes responsibility for the enunciation in translated discourse. The goal of this paper is two-fold. At the theoretical and methodological level, a detailed characterization of Translator’s notes, which are here understood as key enunciative devices of translated discourse, is intended. Methodological considerations are then illustrated at the analytical level through the study of the first complete Spanish translation of Borderlands/ La Frontera. The New Mestiza (Anzaldúa, [1987] 1999), performed by Norma E. Cantú and published in Mexico in 2015.
