Use of internet searches to anticipate the Gross Domestic Product

Este documento busca analizar la eficiencia de distintas metodologías para estimar un indicador líder que anticipa el Producto Interno Bruto en Colombia, utilizando la herramienta Google Trends. Se utiliza la metodología de nowcasting de Choi & Varian (2011) y de Mejía et al. (2013) para indagar sobre la posibilidad de mejorar las estimaciones considerando algoritmos de aprendizaje automático (Machine Learning). This document seeks to analyze the efficiency of different methodologies to estimate a leading indicator which anticipates the Gross Domestic Product in Colombia, using the Google Trends tool. This paper builds on the nowcasting methodology developed by Choi & Varian (2011) and Mejía et al. (2013) to inquire about the possibility of improving the estimations through Machine Learning algorithms. Magíster en Economía Maestría
